Boats, sailing equipment, fishing gear ... that and much more is at The Herald Hunter Boat Show this weekend.
Newcastle EntertainmentCentre is about to becomethe only place for boatingenthusiasts for one weekend.That weekend is this weekend,whenThe Herald Boat Show,covering the Hunter and CentralCoast, will attract up to 10,000people to displays of boats, equipment,boating advice, fishing gearand all things nautical.A visit will be a great day outfor all the family with trailer boatsgalore, electronics, fishing gear,all sorts of accessories, fishingdisplays with barrumundi in a seethroughsupertank and the chanceto win a $22,400 boat and trailerpackage.It?s hard to think of a reasonnot to go. There will be up to 40exhibitors - some for the firsttime - and around 200 boats ondisplay, including a few BoatingIndustry Association of NSW (BIA)Boat-of-the-Year award winners.As well as boats there will befishing tackle displays, financialadvice, NSW Maritime andWhitsunday Rent a Yacht exhibitions.The boat show is organised bythe BIA, which took it over threeyears ago and has seen it go fromstrength to strength.The BIA also annually organisesthe Sydney International BoatShow, the largest recreationalboating show in the southernhemisphere which this yearattracted 89,451 people to itsDarling Harbour displays of morethan 300 exhibitors.?This year again showed thatSydney really deserves its internationalrating,? said DomenicGenua, marketing and eventmanager for NSW BIA. ?Visitorsat Darling Harbour were fromthe United States, China, UnitedKingdom, South Africa, Italy,Greece, New Zealand, Thailandand Singapore, to name only afew.?Newcastle has a long way togo before it can stand with theSydney show, but it does showcasethe best of boating fromNewcastle and the Central Coast.The BIA has made a commitmentto continue developing itsactivities in the Hunter region andin particular to ensure the boatshow continues.Among this year?s exhibitorsspread over about 8000square metres of display spaceare Belmont Affordable Boats,Berowra Waters Marina, Big CatchFishing Tackle, Blakes Marine,Capital Finance, Club Marine,Coast Life Marine, Craigcat,d?Albora Marinas, EndeavourMarine, GRE Marine Sales, JimNicol Honda Marine, LavereProducts, Lewis Ski Boats, MirageSport Boats, Newcastle Jet SkiCentre, Newcastle Marine World,NSW Maritime, Pacific Yachting,Solas Propellers, Terrace Boating,TR Marineworld, Twin PeaksLeisure, Warners Bay Marine,Waves Overseas, WhitsundayRent A Yacht, Stormy Australia,Bias Mail Orders, Zelous MarineTrimming, Just Propellers,JD?s Boatshed, Collins Marine,Australian Volunteer Coast Guard,Coast to Coast Boating, PenrithPowerboat Centre, the BIA,Hirecraft, Avante Marine Group,Tomo?s Marine and Wild WaterSports.The line up of exhibitors showsthe marine industry has embracedthe boat show as the key event forthe region to show the latest andmost innovative products.The boat show encompassesa display of recreational vesselsto suit those who are either keenboaters or novices looking to setsail, sing along with a JimmyBuffet song and embrace the boatinglifestyle.Australians of all ages are nowembracing boating in greaternumbers as they discover whatthe fantastic Australian coastlinehas to offer.NSW Maritime reports there arenow 200,000 registered boats inNSW and 442,000 licensed boatdrivers.?Boating as an activity is increasingby 3 per cent to 4 per cent ayear,? a NSW Maritime spokesmansaid. ?It?s a steady climb?.To give an idea of the growthin boating, in the last 12 monthsthere were 76,000 calls to theNSW Maritime info line while thepage views on its website leaptfrom 800,000 to 2.3 million.That?s a lot of interest from a lotof people.And it?s not just the realm ofthe rich. Recent surveys by NSWMaritime show the most commonlyowned vessel is a smallpower boat to 12 metres, with 66per cent of respondents fallinginto that category.And boating, while very popularwith recreational cruisers, is alsovery important to the millions ofAustralians who have a passionfor fishing, which is why BrianAnson Smith and his supertankare back at the show this yearto share with the audience tipson fishing and show them whatreally happens when the bait iscast.
