KAYAKING is recognised as the fastest growing sport in Australia.

David Smith from Blue Water Sea Kayaking said it was fantastic low-impact exercise.

"It's a great way to get away from it all and explore beautiful places, and the gear is virtually maintenance-free," Mr Smith said.

"If you're interested in getting into kayaking you'll need three things. First, you'll need to look at a large range of kayaks to give you the best chance of seeing the best kayak for you.

"Secondly, you'll need to talk to an expert who can guide you through the process of matching your planned use of a kayak, your physical stature, your budget and any transport and storage constraints with a particular kayak.

"And thirdly, you'll need to try some out on the water, either to make a choice between similar kayaks that, on specifications, suit your needs, or just to confirm that the one you've chosen is going to do what you think it should."

Mr Smith said Blue Water Sea Kayaking was the Hunter's only specialist, multibrand kayak retailer and the staff were instructors.

"From our waterfront premises at the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club Marina, we sell a large range of sea kayaks, sit-on-top kayaks, fishing kayaks and recreational kayaks from only the best brands.

"We've just significantly increased the range of sit-on-tops. We now have some glass-bottom kayaks, perfect for exploring the underwater world, and several specialist fishing kayaks, some with electric motors on the stern which take the hard work out of a day's fishing from a kayak while allowing you to get to places you could never get with a boat."

Alternatively, you could just hire a kayak for a paddle down Newcastle Harbour.
