LAWN bowls and belly dancing don't usually share the same bill, but this year's Shellharbour City Festival of Sport is set to change that.
Whether you're into wrestling, golf or both, the full sweep of sporting endeavour will be on show during the jam-packed three-day festival which starts today.Festival secretary Diane Johnston said more than 20 events would be thrown into the sporting mix to promote the benefits of getting out and about."We're trying to get the community and visitors to the area to enjoy a healthy lifestyle and to get out and into the great outdoors," she said."The festival is run by six volunteers - they're people who are interested in sport and trying to get children and adults to be more active and outdoors."We try to get all of the community's sporting groups involved and help them promote their clubs through demonstration and 'come 'n' try' events.Crowd pleasers like tomorrow's dragon boat race and Sunday's family fun day at Lake Illawarra PCYC will make the festival's seventh year a big one, Ms Johnston said."We started small, but each year it's getting bigger and better - we've got 12 dragon boat teams this year and we're expecting more than 2000 people at the fun day," she said."A sport like lawn bowls is sometimes seen as just for older people but our Barefoot and Boardies night is designed to show it's fun for all ages."THE PROGRAMShell Cove Shellharbour City Festival Of Sport daily programFRIDAYLawn Bowls - Men's Mufti Pairs CompetitionAlbion Park Bowling Club, Taylor Rd, Albion Park9.15amCost: $7 per person (includes lunch)Contact: Mick Duprez 4256 1844Lawn Bowls - 2 Bowl Triples CompetitionWarilla Bowls & Recreation Club, Jason Ave, Barrack Heights9am-4.30pmCost: $5 per person (includes light lunch)Contact: Rocky Stone 4297 3904Golf - Junior Golf ClinicShellharbour Links Golf Course, cnr Shellharbour Rd and Southern Cross Boulevarde, Shell Cove4-6pmFreeAll equipment suppliedContact: Shellharbour Links Pro Shop, 4237 5555Shellharbour Sports Star of the Year AwardsShellharbour Workers Club6.30pm for 7pmSATURDAYBodyboarding & SurfboardingWarilla Beach7am-2pm$10 per personBodyboard competition in morning, surfboard competition in afternoonBookings essentialContact: Ray Corcoran, 4297 7012Dragon Boat RacesSkiway Park, Oak Flats (Lake Illawarra)9am-3pm$26 per person - 20 people per team requiredBookings essential before the day.Contact: Lee Cramer, 0418 113 698 or Diane Johnston on 4221 6169Golf Stableford EventCalderwood Valley Golf Course, 532 Calderwood Rd, Albion Park7am-noon$21 per personContact: Mal Robertson 4256 3055Golf - Shellharbour City Festival of Sport Golf CupShellharbour Links Golf Course6am to 1.30pm$10 per personContact Shellharbour Links Pro Shop on 4237 5555 for tee timesGymnastics - Come 'n' tryCarmel & Co Gymnastics, 46 Sunset Ave, Warilla3-5pm$6 per personContact: Carmel Murphy 4297 4400 or 4296 6390Lawn Bowls Barefoot & Boardies Bowls NightOak Flats Bowling Club6.30pm-8.30pmFree (includes barbecue dinner)Must be aged 12 years and overContact: Bob James 4256 1444Shell Cove Walk Meet Shellharbour Ocean Beach Pub10amFree - barbecue lunch includedBookings essentialContact: Lee Cramer 0418 113 698Taekwondo Come 'n' TryKDs Taekwondo Academy Warilla, South Coast Martial Arts Centre, 1/23 Sunset Ave, Warilla11am-1pmFreeContact: Kevin Docherty 4296 5176SUNDAY Family Fun DayLake Illawarra PCYC, Reddall Pde, Lake Illawarra10am-3pmGolf Public Open DayShellharbour Links Golf Course, Shell CoveFrom noonCost: $10 per person (play as many holes as you want)Contact: Shellharbour Links Pro Shop on 4237 5555Table Tennis - Come 'n' TryShellharbour Workers Club (auditorium)2pm-4.30pmFree, all ages.
