LAWN bowls and belly dancing don't usually share the same bill, but this year's Shellharbour City Festival of Sport is set to change that.

Whether you're into wrestling, golf or both, the full sweep of sporting endeavour will be on show during the jam-packed three-day festival which starts today.

Festival secretary Diane Johnston said more than 20 events would be thrown into the sporting mix to promote the benefits of getting out and about.

"We're trying to get the community and visitors to the area to enjoy a healthy lifestyle and to get out and into the great outdoors," she said.

"The festival is run by six volunteers - they're people who are interested in sport and trying to get children and adults to be more active and outdoors.

"We try to get all of the community's sporting groups involved and help them promote their clubs through demonstration and 'come 'n' try' events.

Crowd pleasers like tomorrow's dragon boat race and Sunday's family fun day at Lake Illawarra PCYC will make the festival's seventh year a big one, Ms Johnston said.

"We started small, but each year it's getting bigger and better - we've got 12 dragon boat teams this year and we're expecting more than 2000 people at the fun day," she said.

"A sport like lawn bowls is sometimes seen as just for older people but our Barefoot and Boardies night is designed to show it's fun for all ages."
