A New Angle On Catch Of The Day

THE fish are biting and it's time to get out the fishing gear and get into the action.
Ern Webb Sports' fishing department manager Mark Goodger said at the moment there were big salmon schools moving in to be fished from the beach or rocks, flathead were starting to enter estauries and the bream were on the tooth.
He warned, however, that one important detail should be dealt with before setting off with rod and reel - the matter of a fishing licence.
``I would suggest information be sought from the NSW Fisheries office (Reddall Pde, Lake Illawarra South, ph 42951809)."
Something new in the way of bait which is causing great interest among fishers is the soft plastic lure.
``The lures are really an old idea which hit the country about 15 years ago but which didn't take off. But with the latest techniques they make it so much easier for everyone to catch a fish and just about everyone uses them," Mr Goodger said.
``They are user friendly, flavoured (including aniseed and garlic), and highly coloured, suitable for most types of fish and all types of water, reusable and retrievable. Choose from pinks, greens, orange, red, gold, silver and blue among others.
``The lures come in a plastic pouch which can be left in the glovebox and there's no need to dash about getting fresh bait.
``I believe they actually fish a lot better than fresh bait."
A keen fisherman who makes the most of any opportunity to get out in the fresh air to enjoy his sport, Mr Goodger recently returned from a trip to Melville Island 100km north of Darwin, testing the latest in Shimano fishing tackle, catching and releasing barramundi, giant trevally, mangrove jacks and blue salmon.
Another employee, Andrew Wheeler, returned last week from Weipa where he captured and released 20 different species using fly fishing tackle.
``We pride ourselves on being able to offer advice to people of all levels of fishing from youngsters starting out to big game fishers," Mr Goodger said.
